Education from the farm

Hempsals Community Farm offers a wide range of educational opportunities for all ages. Our very popular ‘hatching in schools’ programmes offer the chance to bring the farm right in to your classroom! It is a wonderful opportunity for children to interact, care for and learn about the life cycle of chickens from incubation right through to hatching and growth. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and is designed to be as easy as possible for the school.

We also offer talks for schools, pre-schools, residential care homes and groups such as the WI or horticultural societies. Our talks can be tailored to your requirements and can cover subjects such as rearing poultry for eggs and meat, beekeeping and pollination, cheese making, curing and cooking meat as well as an overview of sustainable agriculture as we practice it on the farm. We can bring chicks, ducklings, goslings with us (in season) as well as adult birds year round if appropriate and also bring samples of farm produce for tasting.

The farm is also available to receive visits from schools, pre-schools and other community groups. We have regular visits from scouts, guides, rainbows and cub groups which enable them to meet our animals, help out on the farm with milking and veg growing and finishing up with toasting marshmallows on a bonfire in our firepit.

Alternatively, let us bring the farm to you! We offer a ‘mobile farm’ experience bringing sheep, goats and pigs to you along with a selection of poultry. Feed the goats, stroke the lambs and learn about sustainable agriculture with our pop-up farm.
